Add value, gain happiness

The pursuit of happiness has left many people bewildered. What matters more? Is it material wealth and gains. Or is it time spent with loved ones and being devoid of ambition. Is it necessary to be saint like in order to enjoy spiritual bliss. Or can one be in actively engaged in pursuit of work, progress and still stay happy.

There can be one thing that has come from my few experiences here and that’s the realization is that you can be truly happy only when you matter.

This line is something that I borrow from my Facebook friend Robert D la Gesse, he always seeks to find ways in order “TO MATTER MORE“!

“To matter more means to generate more meaning out of your existence.”

If you have to matter more that means you have to take the work you do seriously, you have to choose something that is actually beneficial to those around you, mankind as well as your own personal well being. Something that helps you to become a more complete human, someone who is not always yearning for ways and mindless distractions to fill up their voids of existence.

The problem with most of us these days is that we are taught to seek happiness and that somehow being happy is the ultimate goal of life as it’s short and what not.

The whole flaw in the above logic is the fact that happiness can never be consciously attained if one keeps running after it. It’s a byproduct of being a good person, of being someone who can understand what drives them and how. By not seeking it continuously and instead working on how to matter more.

Being happy is very simple. Let’s break it down in small actionable steps.

What can bring you happiness and presumably peace?

  • Helping others matter more.
Trust me nothing works as great as helping others figure it out, and maybe there’s a slight chance that you might figure out the answers to your own puzzle by helping others matter more.
  • Finding something creatively challenging.
When you find something that pushes you as an artist and forces you to think beyond your normal thinking patterns, that’s pure gold. Once you overcome that challenge you will feel an intense rush of happiness, trust me this one works.

Find something that challenges you, and then face it. Don’t run from such things!
  • Break free of routine.
One thing that the human brain hates is routine. We are all individuals and being unique is our normal state of being.
Routine can bring a lot of sadness as there’s nothing new to be excited about. If you are someone whose entire life/workflow depends upon a fixed routine then you can try to find out alternate ways to achieve the same end goal. Try to spice up how you do things, try a new music playlist, a new layout for work, a new book to give a boost to your reading appetite. Keep mixing new things with your routine so that you never get bored of what you do. Whether it’s in work, general life or relationships.

If you keep meeting your partner daily at a certain place for years in exact same conditions then the charm would die. That’s why more often that not it’s essential to give some time and effort in personal relationships. Try to do new things together with your family members as well as partner and you will find a side of theirs you didn’t know existed.
  • Appreciate the little things.
More often than not happiness comes when you realise that you already have lot to be happy about and anything more that you gain from personal endeavour is icing on the cake.
  • MATTER MORE.
Existence becomes dull and mundane, only if you don’t give yourself fully to your life, work, relationships and everything. Half-hearted work, half-hearted efforts; these are what lead to discontentment and unhappiness. You can matter more if you care more about everything around you.
And that my friends is the ultimate secret to happiness.

DISCLAIMER: It works for me, but truth is that the very concept of happiness is different for different people. This is some sort of generic propaganda free info that I could think of and in case it works for you then great. In case it doesn’t work for you then don’t worry my friend, hang on. Life might give you the answers at the right time, trust in the power of time and keep giving your best! 😀

Yours truly,
Aditya Nath Jha
