AMD Adds Navi 44 GPU to ROCm for RX 8000 Series

AMD’s ROCm software now supports Navi 44 GPUs, set to power the upcoming RX 8000 series graphics cards.Adds Navi 44 GPU to ROCm.

AMD has updated its ROCm software suite to include the new RDNA 4 GPU chip, Navi 44, which will be used in the next-generation Radeon RX 8000 series graphics cards.

This addition marks the second RDNA 4 GPU in the ROCm hardware enablement list, indicating that AMD is nearing the completion of some RDNA 4 GPU developments.

The first chip, Navi 48, is designated as Gfx1201, while Navi 44 is labeled Gfx1200.

Their appearance in the ROCm support list suggests that AMD has made significant progress in developing at least part of the RDNA 4 GPUs.

AMD’s recent naming convention shows an interesting change. Previous GPU generations typically used sequential numbers, such as RDNA 3’s Navi 31, 32, and 33 chips, and RDNA 2’s Navi 21, 22, 23, and 24 chips.

In April, it was reported that the Navi 4x series would use TSMC’s N4P process technology, similar to the Navi 3x series, but with some older designs removed to increase GPU chip density.

Navi 48

Navi 48 features 64 compute units, a 256-bit memory interface, 693 GB/s memory bandwidth, and an effective bandwidth of 2770 GB/s, with a GPU chip area of 240mm².

Navi 44

Navi 44 has 32 compute units, a 128-bit memory interface, 288 GB/s memory bandwidth, and a GPU chip area of 130mm². It is expected to replace Navi 33, which has similar specifications but a GPU chip area of 204mm².
