On July 28th, Counterpoint Research released a report revealing a significant 24% year-on-year decline in US smartphone shipments during the second quarter of 2023. This marks the third consecutive quarter of negative growth.
In particular, Android phone shipments suffered a substantial 38% year-on-year drop, impacting brands like Samsung, Motorola, and TCL-Alcatel the most. Despite a 6% decrease in Apple’s shipments, the company managed to increase its market share from 45% to an impressive 55% compared to the same period last year.

According to analyst Matthew Orf, the decline in demand for smartphones during the second quarter was influenced by early summer sales declines and consumer hesitancy in upgrading devices amidst market uncertainties.
Orf predicts this trend may continue through the third quarter, but the anticipated release of the iPhone 15 is expected to boost momentum.
However, amidst the overall shipment decline, the foldable phone segment showed signs of recovery, reaching important milestones.
Major players like Motorola, Google, and Samsung launched their own foldable devices, and with Samsung’s introduction of new Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip devices, the foldable phone shipments in the US are expected to reach their highest level ever in the third quarter.
Associate Research Director Hanish Bhatia highlighted Apple’s resilience, as the company managed to increase its shipment share by 10 percentage points despite the shipment decrease.
This impressive feat was attributed to strong promotions by carriers like Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile, offering credits above $800 for the iPhone 14, along with significant discounts on older iPhones during prepaid events.
