Apple has opened the third-party app market in the EU, allowing developers to offer apps through alternative stores or web pages.
However, apps are still subject to Apple’s “core technology fee.”
If an app is installed more than one million times a year, developers must pay Apple €0.5 per additional download.
This practice has been criticized by developers who argue that it contradicts the original intent of the EU and doesn’t prevent competitors from maliciously inflating download numbers.
Recently, Apple quietly updated its fee policy, exempting developers with no income (those distributing free apps without in-app purchases) from the fee, aimed at supporting students, hobbyists, and other non-commercial developers.
They must annually verify their non-commercial status.
For startups with annual revenues below €10 million, Apple has outlined a three-year support process.
If an app or game becomes highly popular and exceeds one million installs, Apple will decide on fees based on the developer’s size, provided they agree to the new AppStore policies.
