Apple has been granted a new patent which would enable the Digital Crown to function as a “joystick” that can move in multiple directions to facilitate interaction.
As per a list published by the United States Trademark and Patent Office (USPTO) on May 26, Apple has recently secured a technical patent concerning the Digital Crown, which would allow users to perform actions beyond just rotation and clicking, but also by moving it in various directions.
The Digital Crown has already been incorporated into Apple Watch and AirPods Max headphones, where users can perform different actions by rotating and pressing it. In a previously approved patent, Apple had also disclosed its plans to introduce the Digital Crown to the iPad.
In this latest patent, Apple has introduced a new way of interacting with the Digital Crown.
A patent design sketch provided by Patently Apply shows a flexible floating button design, where the user can move the button in multiple directions, much like a joystick, to achieve more diverse interactions. The diagram depicted in 2A serves as an example of this new design.
