Apple introduces Apple Watch Ultra 2, offering new features and carbon-neutral options

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA – Apple has unveiled the Apple Watch Ultra 2, an improved version of their rugged and capable smartwatch. This release also marks a significant environmental achievement.

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 includes enhanced features such as the S9 SiP, a new double tap gesture, Apple’s brightest display, expanded altitude range, on-device Siri, Precision Finding for iPhone, and advanced capabilities for water activities.

It runs on watchOS 10, which brings redesigned apps, the Smart Stack, new cycling experiences, outdoor exploration features, and a new watch face called Modular Ultra. The battery life remains the same, with 36 hours of regular use and up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode.

For the first time, customers can choose a carbon-neutral option for any Apple Watch, supporting Apple’s goal of becoming carbon-neutral across its entire business, manufacturing supply chain, and product life cycle by 2030.

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 is available for order starting today, with availability in stores beginning on Friday, September 22.

Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer, said,

“This year we’ve enhanced our most rugged and capable Apple Watch. The Apple Watch Ultra 2 is our most advanced model, offering great performance and feature updates. It’s perfect for those who want a larger, brighter display, longer battery life, and the best GPS capabilities in an Apple Watch, all in a stunning design.”

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 is powered by the custom Apple S9 SiP, providing systemwide improvements and new features. One notable addition is the double tap gesture, which allows users to control the watch with one hand without touching the display. The gesture can perform various actions, such as stopping a timer, playing music, answering phone calls, and more.

It is enabled by the faster Neural Engine in the Apple Watch Ultra 2. The display of the Apple Watch Ultra 2 has been significantly improved, with a maximum brightness of 3000 nits, making it 50 percent brighter than the previous generation. It also has a lower brightness setting for dark environments.

The new Modular Ultra watch face takes advantage of the larger display and offers a wide range of complications for customization. The Apple Watch Ultra 2 has been tested for extreme conditions and is suitable for activities such as recreational scuba diving, freediving, and water sports. It can withstand altitudes ranging from 500 meters below sea level to 9,000 meters above sea level.

One of the notable software features is the on-device Siri, which can process requests without relying on Wi-Fi or cellular networks for faster responses. Siri can also access and log health data from the Health app, allowing users to inquire about their health and fitness-related information. The Apple Watch Ultra 2 includes Precision Finding, which utilizes the Ultra Wideband chip to help users locate their misplaced iPhone with distance and direction guidance.

The watchOS 10 update brings various improvements and new features, including redesigned apps, new watch faces, enhanced cycling workouts, an updated Compass app with real-time elevation display, topographic maps in the Maps app, and additional tools for mental health support.

Apple’s commitment to environmental sustainability is reflected in the carbon-neutral options for the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and other models. The carbon footprint of the Apple Watch Ultra 2 has been significantly reduced, with emissions offset through high-quality carbon credits from nature-based projects.

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 is available in 49 mm size and can be paired with the Trail Loop or Alpine Loop bands, which are also carbon neutral and contain recycled content. The Apple Watch Ultra 2 can now be ordered in select countries, with availability starting on September 22. The price for the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is $799 (U.S.).

The watchOS 10 update will be available on September 18 for Apple Watch Series 4 and later models, requiring iPhone Xs or later with iOS 17. Customers who purchase the Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch SE, Apple Watch Ultra 2, or a new Apple Watch Series 4 or later will receive three months of Apple Fitness+.
