Coolpad Mega 2.5D Hands on Review (Specifications and Price)

Another product from the Make In India campaign, Coolpad today launched their Coolpad Mega 2.5D selfie-focused smartphone at INR 6,990. The smartphone will be available exclusively on Amazon via a flash sale, which will take place on 24 August 2016 at 2:00 PM with registrations kicking off on Wednesday from 5:00 PM.

The Chinese consumer electronics giant spoke heavily about the new features of this smartphone, including custom UI with theme support, smart pattern unlock, and much more. Let’s have a sneak peek into what this device has in store for us.

Coolpad Mega 2.5D Specifications and Price:

Design and Display:

Coolpad Mega 2.5 features a 5.5-inch display, which makes it one of the bigger smartphones in this price range. And the screen looks even bigger, thanks to the bezels on the side. And surprisingly, this big smartphone is pretty light on hand, weighing only 143 gms.

The body is plastic with metal frames running along the edges. The front side of the phone consists of a front camera and capacitive touch home keys. The back side consists of the main camera embedded into rings and at the bottom, the Coolpad logo. The minimalist design makes it look a little bit more premium as compared to the price.

Camera:

The camera is the USP of Coolpad Mega 2.5. The front camera is 8 MP, which is a pretty high resolution that rivals do not offer at this cost. There’s also a wide 83.6-degree field of view and f/2.2 aperture. The front camera is also loaded with Beautification mode and age detection.

Now the camera might be the USP but don’t have too high expectations out of it. If I rate a picture out of 10, the camera performs like 7/10. It works according to the price, reasonable lighting, and sharpness.  Though the wide angle helps a lot in clicking group pictures easily. The rear camera is also 8 MP, but the result from that lens is also a bit grainy but better than the front camera for sure.

Software:

Coolpad Mega 2.5 comes with a 1 GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6735P chipset with 3 GB RAM and 16 GB internal memory (expandable up to 32 GB via micro SD card). Again in the budget smartphone segment, Coolpad stands out as one of those brands that offer 3 GB RAM at INR 7000.

The device runs on Android 6.0 marshmallow and on top runs the Cool UI 8.0. The Cool UI has introduced single-hand unlocking along with rectangular-shaped icons and neater tabs. Coolpad Mega 2.5D also comes with a 2,500 mAh battery which the company claims can last long for 9 hours of talk time. The device also gives the option to optimize battery life.

All in all, Coolpad Mega 2.5 is a well-designed budget smartphone. But then in competition stands the newly launched Xiaomi Redmi 3S, which costs the same and has a battery size of 4100 mAh that lasts for 2 days. So, let’s see whether Coolpad will manage to beat the competition or not.
