Elon Musk Praises Mark Zuckerberg’s Open-Sourcing of Llama 3.1

On Tuesday, Meta released the latest AI model, Llama 3.1. Meta claims that this model outperforms OpenAI’s GPT-4 and is open-source, available to the public for free.

Subsequently, Elon Musk uncharacteristically praised Mark Zuckerberg. In response to a post by Tesla’s former AI director Andrej Karpathy about the model, Musk stated: “This is impressive, and Zuckerberg’s decision to make it open-source is commendable.”

Meta representatives have yet to comment on this.

Both Zuckerberg and Musk have been outspoken about their ambitions in AI. In January, Zuckerberg mentioned in an interview that Meta has been stockpiling AI chips from Nvidia.

Zuckerberg said, “We have been doing this on a scale that may be larger than any other company. I think this is something that many people might not want to see.”

Similarly, Musk’s AI startup xAI raised $6 billion in a Series B funding round in May.

Musk’s motivation for founding xAI partly stemmed from disagreements with the co-founder of OpenAI.

In 2015, Musk and current CEO Sam Altman co-founded OpenAI, but Musk left the company’s board in 2018.

In February 2023, Musk expressed on the X platform, “OpenAI was meant to be an open-source company (hence the name), a non-profit to counterbalance Google, but it has now become a closed-source, profit-driven entity effectively controlled by Microsoft. This was never my intention.”

Zuckerberg agreed with this perspective, outlining a similar spirit in a company blog post on Tuesday.

Zuckerberg wrote, “I believe that open source is necessary for a positive AI future.”

He added, “There is ongoing debate about the safety of open-source AI models. My view is that open-source AI will be safer than other alternatives.

I believe that countries will conclude that supporting open-source is in their interest as it will lead to a more prosperous and safer world.”
