EU investigates Meta’s Facebook and Instagram for addictive content and minor safety under the Digital Services Act, assessing fines.

The European Union has initiated a formal investigation into Meta, focusing on Facebook and Instagram.

european union flag ccThis action, announced by EU Commissioner Thierry Breton on X, a social media platform, arises from concerns that Meta is not adequately adhering to the Digital Services Act (DSA).

The main issues are the platforms’ potentially addictive qualities and the “rabbit hole” effect, which might distract users from reality.

Breton pointed out that the EU will delve into several critical areas: the addictive potential of the platforms and their effectiveness in entrapping users in continuous content loops, the efficacy of age verification tools, and the level of privacy and security offered to minors within the recommendation algorithms.

The EU Commission expressed apprehensions that the algorithms of Facebook and Instagram might encourage online addiction among children and create a “rabbit hole” effect.

This investigation is part of the Digital Services Act (DSA) implemented last year, requiring tech companies to intensify efforts against illegal and harmful content on their platforms.

Companies found violating the DSA could face penalties of up to 6% of their annual global turnover.
