The future of Google’s design strategy: Material Design

Google Inc. is a company which is changing our world day by day; they have slowly and steadily permeated into every facet of our lives. Whether it’s Google search, Gmail, Google Docs, Android or any other Google product that we use, we are constantly becoming dependent on Google for our needs. This calls for Google to have a unified approach towards all of its products. Users don’t want to be confused between the different platforms of mobile and web. They seek uniformity and ease of usage. This is exactly what Google aims to provide to us through its Material design.

What is Material design? Where does it seek its inspiration from?
The word Material in Material design is a metaphor according to Google. The notion of material according to them is a combined approach towards surfaces and spaces. They have tried to keep it real yet make it seem open to new design changes and exploration.
The trend towards flat design that has dominated web design and interfaces since 2013 is visible in Material design too. Material design can be aptly called as Google’s take on Flat design.
The concept of bold typography and edge to edge design is evident in the Material design. Bold colours that stand out, designs which seem hierarchical and use of white spaces intentionally to accentuate some of the other content is one of the essential features of the Material Design provided by Google.
What is the Aim of Material design?
The aim of material design according to Google is to help user find things better. The aim is to aid user action and make working on any device or platform easier and pleasurable experience.
Animation, touch inputs and everything is geared towards making the user feel in control of the system and user interface elements. Animation components have been designed to look like the part of a single platform.
Finally to sum it up in the words of Google itself,
“Design is the art of considered creation. Our goal is to satisfy the diverse spectrum of human needs. As those needs evolve, so too must our designs, practices and philosophies.
We challenge ourselves to create a visual language for our users that synthesizes the classic principles of good design with the innovation and possibility of technology and science.
THIS IS MATERIAL DESIGN!”

What does it mean for the end user?
For people like you and me it means that we will get a better user experience on our Android devices, on Google services on the internet and elsewhere and it has already been rolled out on so many of Google’s products already!
Material design went live on Android with Android 5 i.e. Android Lollipop and has been refined to a high extent in the newer releases, the latest being Android Nougat. It will be slowly seen across all Google services and we hope that using our favorite Google product will be easier in the near future!
