Gigabyte announces world’s first PCIe 4.0 SSD, expect great speeds!

Read and write speeds over 5GB/s, dayumn son!

Gigabyte recently announced a series of new products and technologies to be unveiled at the Taipei Computer Show. This includes the world’s first SSD solid state drive based on the PCIe 4.0 interface standard. The M.2 specification has a read/write speed of up to 5GB per second!

What is this concept?

The current high-performance M.2 SSDs are PCIe 3.0 x4 channels with 4GB/s bandwidth, while the next-generation PCIe 4.0 specification doubles the bandwidth. PCIe 4.0 x4 provides 8GB/s and PCIe 4.0 x16 full-duplex. The possibility is up to 64GB/s.

Of course, this PCIe 4.0 SSD must be paired with AMD X570 motherboard and Ryzen 3000 series processor, which is the first and only consumer platform that supports PCIe 4.0 as of now. The test system included the AMD EPYC Opteron processor and the next-generation AMD Radeon Instinct card.

Gigabyte did not disclose more details of this PCIe 4.0 SSD, but consider it a newcomer in the SSD field. Previously, it only used the group master, this time it should be no exception, probably it was previously shown on CES 2019. PS5016-E16.

The master supports eight NAND channels and 32 CEs and is equipped with a fourth-generation LDPC ECC error correction engine. The interface has a transmission speed of 800MT/s and supports 3D TLC/QLC NAND flash and DDR4-1600 DRAM cache.

It is worth mentioning that Gigabyte claims that even at 5GB/s ultra-high speed, PCIe 4.0 SSD will have a very low operating temperature. This means that it will use advanced, complex cooling solutions, and maintain the temperature control itself. Specifications wise the SSD capacity is bound to be very high, expected at least 2TB.

In addition, at the beginning of the year when the maximum read and write speed is only 4GB per second to 4.2GB/s, it seems that in the past six months performance has improved a lot. PCIe 4.0 also has boosted the read-write speeds quite significantly. Future products based on this specification are bound to have amazing speeds.

Who benefits from such high speeds?

Anyone who has to work on huge file sizes like a Video editor, modern gamer or enthusiast would definitely benefit from the improved speeds. A great thing to keep in mind is the fact that a better read-write speed enhances the overall computing experience as well. This is because the user doesn’t have to bother much about I/O lag while computing.
