Google CEO Admits AI Summary Function Has “Hallucination” Issue: No Solution Yet

May 26, 2024 – Google’s newly introduced “AI Overviews” feature has been criticized for frequently providing highly inaccurate search result information, such as suggesting using glue to keep cheese from sliding off pizza.

Earlier this week, in an interview with The Verge, Google CEO Sundar Pichai acknowledged that the “hallucinations” produced by these AI summaries are an inherent flaw of large language models (LLMs), which are the core technology behind this feature.

Pichai stated that this issue remains unresolved.

Despite ongoing efforts by Google engineers to fix these bizarre and severe errors, such problems persist.

However, Pichai seemed to downplay the severity of these errors.

He remarked,

“The AI Overviews feature sometimes makes mistakes, but that doesn’t mean it’s useless.

I don’t think that’s the right way to look at it. Have we made progress? Yes, definitely. Compared to last year, we have significantly improved in terms of factual accuracy.

The entire industry is improving, but the problem is not completely solved.”

Although Pichai is optimistic about the utility of the AI Overviews feature, the errors have caused a stir online, with many users showcasing various examples of incorrect information generated by the feature.

This further damages Google Search’s credibility, which has already been criticized for delivering poor results.

We also noted that AI consultant and SEO expert Britney Muller wrote on social media,

“People expect AI to be far more accurate than traditional methods, but that’s not always the case! Google is making a risky gamble in the search field to outdo competitors like Perplexity and OpenAI, but they could have applied AI to bigger, more valuable use cases.”
