Huawei smartphones might not support Google Play in the future!

Is this the end of Huawei’s Android journey?

After being put on security ban by the US Department of Commerce, the chip and software of the US companies cannot be used by Huawei. The biggest problem for Huawei mobile phones is that the Android system and Google’s GMS service and application can not be used by them if we go by this info. This problem hasn’t led to much impact on Chinese users. But if you can’t use Google Apps and services in overseas markets, the appeal of Huawei’s mobile phones will obviously decline.

According to reports from other publications, sources said that in addition to the services obtained through open source licenses, Google has suspended some of its cooperation with Huawei, including the transfer of hardware, software and technology services. Huawei may face difficulties in upgrading the Android version and using Google services in foreign markets.

The source said:

“Huawei can only use the public version of Android and cannot access Google’s proprietary applications and services.”

Google China responded by email to reporters saying,

“We are complying with this order and reviewing its impact.”

However, the above reply still has many loopholes. In addition, Google China’s reply does not actually confirm or deny that Huawei can’t continue to use Android and Google services. The authoritative response also requires Android official response.

Now the official response has arrived from Android:

The Android officials have said that

“while complying with all legal requirements of the US government, services such as Google PlayStore and security patches will continue to run on existing Huawei phones.”

To put it simply, the official Android statement clearly shows that Huawei mobile phones can continue to use the Play Store and update security patches. It is not rumoured that Google has completely stopped its cooperation with Huawei in GMS applications and services. But most probably all future Huawei phones would lose access to Google’s Android operating system and it’s services.

It’s really a sad day for the tech industry as Huawei had been quite good at innovating in the past few years. Their recent smartphones like the Huawei P30 Pro were nothing short of brilliant! But even then it’s kind strange how a whole country can ban a manufacturer like this because of some doubts over security. We need better research and access to other data before finalizing any decision like this. In all essence, this seems like an anti-competitive behaviour shown by the U.S. government.

UPDATE: We now have an official statement from Huawei which states some major pain points and the path for the future!

“Huawei has made substantial contributions to the development and growth of Android around the world. As one of Android’s key global partners, we have worked closely with their open-source platform to develop an ecosystem that has benefitted both users and the industry. Huawei will continue to provide security updates and after-sales services to all existing Huawei and Honor smartphone and tablet products, covering those that have been sold and that are still in stock globally. We will continue to build a safe and sustainable software ecosystem, in order to provide the best experience for all users globally.”

Right now there’s also news that Huawei has the ban lifted for 90 days in the U.S.A. But what would happen after August there’s no clear cut information on the same as of yet! Now time will tell what happens in the future! Till then fingers crossed for Huawei! So guys what do you personally think? Do let us know in the comments section below!
