On June 12, Apple unveiled iOS 18 at the WWDC24 developer conference. This major update includes several visual enhancements.
One notable addition in the first developer preview of iOS 18 is the animation effect when pressing physical buttons.
When users press the volume or power buttons, an “squeeze effect” animation appears at the button’s location, which adjusts its speed based on the frequency of presses.
Notably, iOS 18 displays both a volume bar and the button press animation at the volume button’s location.
Apple rarely overlays effects on existing interaction logic, usually reserving such changes for transition periods, like the shift from 3D Touch to Haptic Touch.
Additionally, Apple introduced a shutdown feature in the control center, enabling shutdown without pressing the power button, possibly paving the way for the introduction of solid-state buttons.
Previously, there were rumors that the iPhone 15 Pro models would feature solid-state buttons, but technical issues before mass production led to a return to physical button designs for the Pro and Pro Max models.
Insider sources suggest that the iPhone 16 Pro series might adopt capacitive buttons, eliminating all physical buttons while keeping their current locations unchanged.
This design aims to reduce bezel openings, and the shutdown method will still involve the power and volume button combination.
