On May 7, 2024, a consortium of Japanese telecommunications companies announced the development of a cutting-edge 6G prototype device.
This prototype achieves a groundbreaking transmission speed of 100Gbps over a distance of 100 meters.
This speed is ten times the peak speed of current 5G technologies and more than 500 times the download speed of typical 5G smartphones.
The consortium, including industry giants like DOCOMO, NTT Corporation, NEC Corporation, and Fujitsu, collaborated to create this spherical device, marking a significant advancement in wireless communications.
The prototype can handle speeds of 100 Gbps in both indoor and outdoor environments using frequency bands of 100 GHz and 300 GHz, respectively.
Currently, the prototype is in the experimental stage and is not ready for commercial deployment. Transitioning from 5G to 6G presents several challenges.
While current 5G networks have a theoretical transmission capacity of up to 10 Gbps, practical limitations due to high-frequency use result in reduced coverage and limited obstacle penetration capabilities.
The 6G network aims to overcome these limitations by utilizing higher frequency bands.
