Meta’s Expansion in EU: Introducing Paid, Ad-Free Versions of Facebook and Instagram, Reveals Insider Sources

According to the New York Times, Meta is reportedly considering the launch of paid versions of Facebook and Instagram in the EU, which would exclude ads for users.

Insider sources have revealed that by subscribing to paid Facebook and Instagram services, users can enjoy an ad-free experience. This move is seen as a strategic response by Meta to address privacy concerns and regulatory scrutiny from EU authorities.

While free versions of Facebook and Instagram with ads will continue to be available in the EU, the exact pricing and release dates for the paid versions remain undisclosed.

In July, Meta faced restrictions imposed by the EU’s highest court, preventing the merging of user data collected through its platforms (including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp) with external websites and apps, unless explicit user consent is obtained.

Additionally, Meta incurred a fine of 390 million euros from Irish regulators in January, as they forced users to accept personalized ads as a prerequisite for using Facebook.

These developments are a result of Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), enacted in 2018 to safeguard individuals’ online data, marking a significant milestone in data protection legislation.
