The Redmi Note Phablet is a great device, it’s a mixture between a smartphone and a tablet, when Samsung first launched the Note Phablet, we had high hopes from the device. These days, almost all major companies make Phablets, but sadly, none of them falls in the budget category from which comes a large portion of Indian market. The latest Note series phablet cost more than 50,000. Similarly, the phablet from Apple, iPhone 6+ costs more than 60,000, even the generous Google Nexus 6 is above 40,000 here and there is not any one device which is feature rich and within budget. But the game can change really soon, with the advent of Redmi Note Mi, which is priced below 10,000 but has features as good as a phone double its price, we can surely hope for some big change now
Well the device looks seriously great on the papers, but is it really worth anything? Let’s find out below.
Table of Contents
Mi Redmi note: Design and Body
Redmi Note is big big device, huge you may call it, massive build with a thickness of 9.5 mm and a weight of 199 gram, that’s a lot of weight. This is more than the Note 4, no we are not comparing them, but relatively saying. The device is big and heavy. And this could be a major No No for some. But one of the good thing about the device is that it is solid, solid to hold and feels solid. Especially at a price tag of INR 8999, this makes it really special. The body is made of the plastic, the glossy plastic. The same you may have seen in Samsung phones. But the back cover is thicker than those Samsung phones.
The back, which consists of the removable battery, the sim slot for your sim cards, two of them, the camera, LED flash and MicroSD carx slot is curved, which makes the device a little easy to hold on.
I said a little because holding the device with one hand is next to impossible, maybe entirely impossible if you’ve small palms like me.
In terms of design, there’s nothing flashy, the Note doesn’t dazzle at all. There’s nothing which could make it stand out in crowd. But as the build quality of the device is solid, it makes it better than the other devices in the price range.
The larger size makes watching videos on the device a more pleasant experience. The screen is reinforced with Corning Gorilla Glass 3, which means there’s an added layer of protection. The only quibble we have is the size of the bezels. The screen has thick bezels which result in a lot of wasted space. This in turn adds to the size of the device.
Mi Redmi note: Display
The Mi Redmi Note has a 5.5-inch screen with a 720p resolution. This is not the sharpest screen in the market but you can call this pretty decent.
The colours look natural, the viewing angle is great and the brightness is good enough too. It is possible to read text on Redmi Note under direct sunlight.
As the display is large, experience while watching videos on the device is good, pleasant i should say. The screen have Gorilla Glass 3 protection, so your screen is protected enough. One problem with the device though is there are thick bezels on the screen which results in a lot of wasted space and in increase of the weight of device.
Mi Redmi note: Camera
Xiaomi has used a 13-megapixel Samsung sensor for the rear camera on the MI Redmi Note. The camera is decent. It have fast and clicks images which have a lot of detailing and show natural colours. There is a feature called ‘bokeh’ in images which delivers shallow depth of field in close up shots. And it would attract many. The camera performs decently in the low light environment. Don’t expect iPhone like shots which are brightly lit and comes with minimal noise, but it is usable for the general population. Xiaomi phones have very good HDR mode capabilities and this id is true for the Note too. Interface od camera is easy with blend of point and shoot and manual control experience. It will be easy for new users and fun for enthusiasts too. The device have a front camera too, an impressive 5 Megapixel resolution to say. And while it takes better selfies than most phones in the price bracket and market, there’s ain’t anything miraculous. The Redmi Note shoot 1080p videos at 30 frames per second which is a decent quality for the videos. Focus and and stability is well maintained while recording.
Mi Redmi note: Software
One of the biggest issue with the Redmi Note is that it runs on a archaic version of Android, it is still struck with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and we are not even sure whether it will get an upgrade to Kitkat or not, forget about Lollipop. But something good for you is, Xiaomi phones have MiUI, an UI based on android which have the same interface for both Kitkat and Jelly Bean. The version of MiUI with Lollipop will also look them same. So the UI, user interface will remains the same whether it’s Kitkat or Lollipop. Though the core features of Android Lollipop, like ART runtime which is there to improve performance or bug fixes or safety features won’t be available to you unless you get a Lollipop based MiUI. The current MIUI have a simple UI which have neat touches in it. The app switcher have a unique interface combination of android and iOS. The Phablet comes preloaded with apps like SwiftKey keyboard.
Mi Redmi note: Performance
We had the octa core aka 3G version of the MI Redmi Note which is powered by the Mediatek MT6592 Chipset clocked at 1.7 GHz with the two sets of ARM Cortex A7 cores.
The device has a 2 GB RAM, and 8gb of internal memory and Mali 450 graphics processing unit. Internal memory of 8gb can prove to be a little low because the phone have less than 5gb accessible.
You will have to definitely use a MicroSD card with the Redmi Note. But the hardware results are good and gives smooth experience.
For its price tag, the performance of phone is superb to be said. Animations are smooth and you can play heavy duty games like Dead Trigger 2 without much trouble. Multi-tasking is smooth on phone and switching between apps did not feel slow.
Mi Redmi note: Battery life
Battery life of the Note is just brilliant to be said. The phone will easily last you 20-24 hours on a single charge. Also the battery is removable so you can carry an extra one with you for the time of need.
The battery is 3200 mAh.
The Mi Redmi Note is good for the price range. Though the design is not do beautiful but features are great. It also doesn’t cost too much. So you can go for it.
