Is the company still alive?

Micromax has brought back the legacy of its successful Canvas 2 in the form of the new Canvas 2 Plus in India. As with most smartphones in 2018 this one sports a sleek bezel less design. The key features for this phone include an 18:9 screen, face unlock functionality, 4000 mAh big battery, 8 MP selfie camera, still comes with Android Nougat and no Oreo. And the phone comes with 3 GB DDR3 RAM for a price of INR 8999/- in a market which is already overcrowded with excellent sub 10K INR smartphones.

We have seen HMD Global led Nokia do the same by trying to capitalize on the hype of Nokia’s yesteryear’ succesful devices. They have been successful to varying degrees with this strategy, as the rebranded Nokia 3310 and few other devices have done well globally.

Back home Micromax is trying to do the same because its Canvas 2 was a hit product when it was launched and it was one of the most value for money products back then.

Commenting on the launch, Vikas Jain, Co-Founder, Micromax Informatics said,

“Canvas 2 was the first smartphone that we launched in our Canvas range of smartphones back in 2012, which reinvented the way consumers looked at their smartphone as it led to the democratization of technology in India. Over the last few years, as the Indian handset and telecom industry has undergone dynamic shift, the focus of consumers is shifting from just the hardware, to overall connected experience. Therefore, to address the consumer needs, we are coming up with Canvas 2 Plus with compelling features like infinity screen, face unlock feature, compelling battery etc. We expect Canvas 2 Plus to yet again set a bench mark and revolutionize the overall smartphone adoption.”

Canvas 2 Plus specifications and price in India:

Display and Design

It has a 18:9 almost bezel less screen and has a Jet Black glossy finish. At 8 mm the phone is quite thin too.

Face Unlock at a budget!

This smartphone comes with a Fingerprint sensor but also face unlock at the same time. It has been all the rage in these modern times and it’s quite nice to see it coming in this budget segment too.

Big Battery

Canvas 2 Plus comes with a 4000 mAh battery which is large enough to sustain heavy usage.

Internals:

It has 32 GB of inbuilt storage and 3 GB of RAM, though the specifications feel a little dated as you can spend a little bit more and easily get a smartphone like the ASUS Zenfone Max Pro M1 or the Oppo RealMe 1. It has a 1.3 Ghz quad-core processor which does feel dated in this age of powerful budget smartphones.

8MP front Camera for selfies

The Canvas 2 Plus has a dedicated 8 MP front selfie camera and can take normal selfies or groupfies too. It also has a wide number of modes for clicking pictures.

13MP Rear Camera for pictures

The Canvas 2 Plus rear camera comes with ability to add custom watermarks to your pictures and has features like 80 degree wide-angle view, time-lapse functionality, beauty mode and a lot more.

At a price of INR 8,999 the Canvas 2 Plus is a decent option for people willing to bank on the Micromax name and for those who want to support an Indian company. Otherwise on the basis of merit alone there are other smartphones too in the market which deserve your attention.

The smartphone would be available in all leading retail Indian outlets.
