The Micromax YU Yureka is one of the most talked about budget phablets right now and it’s rightly so. With a pricing and hardware power that can put many phones to shame this is a device that can really set the market on fire.

In this highly competitive world of mobile phones where more than 1 great device is being launched weekly, the Yureka causes us to sit up and take notice.

A few days ago we told you guys about Micromax’s new series of smartphones Yu of which Yu Yureka is the first one and promised that we will write a full review of Yu Yureka once we get our hands on it.

Well we would like to tell you that the device is performing well, like really well dude, they sold over 10,000 pieces in 4 seconds, that’s something big (but some people have claimed that the numbers were inflated!). So before we review the Yu Yureka, here are some quick specs for you guys.

Design and Dimensions:

Micromax is one of the most used brands in the Indian market right now as it provides a large number of devices at different price points.

It also has a large no. of users but despite that, it seems as if the Yureka name has been launched just to make a new brand from the start and Micromax doesn’t want YU to get associated with the parent company as there is no sign of Micromax anywhere on the packaging or product!

micromax yu yureka front look

The Yu Yureka is not the slimmest or lightest phone on the market but it does have a better-constructed design than most Micromax phones that we’ve seen before. The front side of the Yureka is smooth and without any specific marking other than an outline of the Home button which is printed beneath the screen.

The Back and Menu buttons don’t have any printed icons but all three light up when the screen is active. There isn’t much room around the screen i.e. bezel is minimum, and the edges are slightly raised which helps prevent scratching.

The YU on the backside of the Yureka is a light blue printed logo that serves the device to stand out. The camera and flash are placed away in one corner and the only other thing on the back to be seen is a small speaker grille running across the bottom.

The power and volume buttons are easily reachable on the sides, and the Micro-USB and headset sockets are on the bottom and top respectively. So basically all 4 sides are important.

Under the rear shell, you’ll find the removable battery, two Micro-SIM card slots, and a microSD slot. One of the SIMs is hot-swappable, but the other two slots can only be used if you remove the battery first.

Micromax Yureka is a big device, it has a screen of 5.5 inches which is covered by Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and has a pixel density of 1280×720.  The screen is bright and good to look at without any constraint to the eyes and the viewing angle is good also.

You will surely enjoy watching HD movies on your device and the pictures also look great apart from the saturation problems shown up in the colors on the screen but we think it’s more of a software-specific issue rather than a hardware-specific issue.

Processor

It has a powerful Octa-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor and Ram capacity of 2 GB with Adreno 405 GPU and it has a 64-bit processor, sounds cool doesn’t it?  And it actually is very cool.

The processor is a giant in itself and the Yureka will be at ease while Multi-tasking like a pro. We could use all kinds of heavy work on the device like playing HD videos or HD games or multi-tasking between a no of apps and what’s not and it performed really well.

So we can easily conclude that the processor and power in Yu Yureka are really tremendous. It was at 8th position in the Antutu benchmark the device is so good, watch our full hands-on and unboxing video below to get a better idea about the device!

Camera

The Camera along with the memory is one of the best things about the device as the Yu Yureka has a rear camera of 13 Megapixel with Sony Exmor R lenses and a front camera of 5 Megapixel with a 71-degree wide viewing angle for your perfect groupies.

The camera though similar to the one which Xiaomi Note 4G have is actually better than that in the case of lower light images. The shots taken from the Yu Yureka were of very good quality and the camera has a lot of features included which makes the camera in the Yu Yureka one of the very best for this price point.

Both the rear and front cameras produce really good images which we have included in the below gallery and you’ll enjoy taking pictures with your Yu Yureka in low lighting too though it requires a few tweaks in the camera settings to get that perfect picture with less noise.

TIP: Use still/stable mode(available effect in Yureka) while clicking pictures in low light to have less noise in the image!

Here is the gallery of the various images we shot from the camera of the Yureka.

Memory

Now my favorite part of the device, is the memory, Micromax YU Yureka has an internal memory of 16 GB and external support for 64 Gb. Also, it has 2 GB RAM for ease of multitasking.

With this much memory, I don’t really think we need to tell you more about how easily the latest games run or how snappy most of the apps performed. Store everything you want in your phone whether it’s HD movies or Games or your Selfie collection, whatever you may like.

This is what we can say is the best thing about the device according to me that it is not handicapped in terms of storage and allows users to expand via a micro SD card.

OS

The OS in Yu Yureka is not one of the typical ones though it’s based on one of them. The os here is Cyanogen OS 11s which is based on Android KitKat and it will soon get an update to OS 12 which will be based on Lollipop.

Now what’s this Cyanogen OS really is has been explained earlier in one of my older posts but just let us quickly rewind that for you.

Cyanogen Mod is basically Android on steroids. It will beef up your device’s capabilities with added security features and an update every month the look and design are also very nice with an option of completely making over the device in any way you want with custom themes and the device is pre-rooted too, kind of a gem for the modders isn’t it?

Battery

One of the few things which I didn’t really like in the Yu Yureka is its battery life. With the specs like these, you will expect the device to have at least 3000mAh of battery to run for a day but that’s where Micromax disappoints you with only 2500mAh of battery.

Though the company promises us that the Cyanogen OS will make the battery life go up to a full day on moderate usage in our tests the device lasted throughout the day on light-moderate usage and on heavy tasks the battery went by really fast. We hope that this will be improved with Cyanogen 12 OS update when it hits this device.

Video Review

Here’s our hands-on, unboxing, and review video of the Yureka handset.

Conclusion

To conclude the review I can say that Yu Yureka is definitely a very good device and one of the best in this price range. It is certainly better than the Chinese giant Xiaomi and its Note 4G and the other competitors.

Only if the phone had a little more battery than we could have called it a perfect device to own but alas. But that doesn’t take away anything much from the device and it’s still one of the best budget phablets in the market.

So that was all for our review, do you have any queries or want to ask something from us regarding the Micromax YU Yureka phone then don’t hesitate to comment!

  1. HI,
Whats about the camera performance of Yu Yureka. Which one device’s camera is batter Yu, Samsung galaxy s3 neo or moto g 2nd generation? Please comment.

    • The best among the above three is the Moto G2 in terms of picture quality, then I would rate the Samsung Galaxy S3 Neo a very close second but in some conditions it clicks better pictures than the G2, though the colours in it’s camera do feel a bit oversaturated at times. The Yureka though has a 13 MP camera the overall quality of pictures in low light conditions is not that good. In day light or bright lighting it outshines the rest but in non optimal light conditions it’s not that good!
