Microsoft’s latest research demonstrates the use of AI to convert non-editable PDF files into editable documents while preserving the original layout and design.

Despite existing tools for converting non-editable PDFs to editable documents, maintaining the original layout has been challenging.

The new paper, titled “Method and System for Generating Editable Documents from Non-Editable Documents,” showcases AI’s capability to retain fonts, colors, layouts, and various formatted images.

The system first analyzes the non-editable document, identifying the arrangement of elements like text, images, and tables. It uses bounding boxes to determine their positions and sizes.

The system then recognizes the fonts used in the non-editable document and employs AI models to choose color schemes based on the original document.

Using the identified layout, fonts, and color schemes, the system creates a new editable document. This new document maintains the appearance and feel of the original non-editable document but allows for editing.

This technology can convert non-editable PDFs into editable files, preserving their original elements, allowing for resizing, and ensuring all content remains intact.
