A hands on initial impressions  of the new Panasonic GH5.

Comparing the specs of GH4 and GH5, everything has been upgraded in GH5 except the battery, which is still the 1860 lithium-ion one.

Panasonic GH5 is a mirrorless camera with a 20 MP Micro Four Thirds sensor without a low-pass filter. It runs on the new Venus Engine processor. Also, there’s the latest feature from Defocus(DFD) autofocus system, which creates a depth map of the scene using pairs of images. This sounded pretty cool! And the result says that with its 9fps continuous shooting in RAW mode with autofocus.

It comes with a Micro Four Third lens kit which gives a better zooming support and few other improved features of GH4.

What’s more?

GH5 with a new, better weather-resistant magnesium alloy body features two UHS-II card slots, a 5-axis in-body image stabilization, better resolution of 3.68 million dots and a brand new viewfinder with larger magnification (0.76x) is a plus for underwater shooting, as Panasonic claims. So it has a fantastic build quality and also features many pleasant enhancements like the vertical grip, I/O interface, and the mounted hot-shoe.

Talking about the 4K mode, Panasonic has improved the high-speed continuous shooting which allows you to shoot few seconds at 30 frames per second and then even pull 8-MP stills with a 4K resolution from the footage. GH5 can even deliver an 18 MP (6K resolution) stills in its new ‘6K photo’ mode. This is the beginning of the vision for an 8K quality photo mode. Here the highlight is the 10-bit 4K recording support for 4:2:2.

So overall, Panasonic GH5 offers lots of wallops as compared to most of the cameras in this price range with its remarkable stills and brilliant video quality, possessing some of the latest connectivity schemes.

It will soon be available in the online market and offline retailers.

Let’s see how this camera proves out to be for its much claimed and hyped underwater shootings!
