Samsung Galaxy Fold display issues, Samsung out with a statement!

Too soon, Samsung?

Samsung recently showcased the Samsung Galaxy Fold some time back. If you are an avid reader of this site you must already know that in the war between bezel-less and folding smartphones we have already picked our side. And it’s not the folding camp for sure. The recent Samsung Galaxy Fold display issues have solidified our opinions a little bit more!

The Samsung Galaxy Fold does look like an excellent product on paper. It showed up before Huawei’s competing folding smartphone and does have everything that a future-ready smartphone should have.

But issues started pretty early for Samsung this time around as the device has been popping up on Twitter since Wednesday showcasing it’s extremely fragile nature.

The first test units for the Samsung Galaxy Fold were sent on Monday. A lot of tech YouTubers and popular tech publications covered the device. Many posted unboxing videos, merits and demerits of an approach towards a smartphone like this. But till now at least four such devices have failed.

Samsung Galaxy Fold display issues: The people hit!

Most of the reviewers have reported about the display panel being gone and no content can now be seen on the display. We generally assume tech reviewers to be the most gentle of the lot and can’t fathom what would the condition of this device be in the hands of normal users.

UPDATE ON 1st of June: Steve Kovach’s tweet about this situation has been DELETED!

Dieter Bohn from The Verge and Steve Kovach from CNBC have seen the display bailing out on them even under normal usage. Seems like Samsung Galaxy Fold display issues have just started!

Even popular Tech YouTuber MKBHD wasn’t exempt from this issue as his display started suffering issues because of improper peeling of a protective layer on the display which looked like a screen protector.

In most of the general smartphone cases, the protective film over the display of the device is meant to be an optional safeguard. Most smartphone users including me remove it on the first chance that we get.

But it seems it won’t work with the Samsung Galaxy Fold.

Samsung Galaxy Fold display issues: Official statement.

But Samsung didn’t wait too long before releasing an official statement that they passed on to The Verge.

A limited number of early Galaxy Fold samples were provided to the media for review. We have received a few reports regarding the main display on the samples provided. We will thoroughly inspect these units in person to determine the cause of the matter.

Separately, a few reviewers reported having removed the top layer of the display causing damage to the screen. The main display on the Galaxy Fold features a top protective layer, which is part of the display structure designed to protect the screen from unintended scratches. Removing the protective layer or adding adhesives to the main display may cause damage. We will ensure this information is clearly delivered to our customers.

This also clears up one crucial piece of information for a lot of users. This device is not meant to support third-party screen protectors.

Samsung Galaxy Fold issues, the conclusion.

Currently, one thing is clear from this whole fiasco that Samsung’s foldable displays are not yet ready for the mass market. But we all should give it a pass as it’s a really experimental product and a breakthrough like this needs to be celebrated and not criticized to the point of disheartening the company.

Another thing to keep track of is the fact is that the reliability issues aren’t present on each and every unit. Some review pieces are still working fine. So what actually needs to be seen is whether the final samples which end in the hands of the buyers are perfectly fine or not!
