Sony Negotiates $1 Billion Deal to Acquire Queen’s Music Catalog

Sony is in talks to buy Queen’s music catalog, including “Bohemian Rhapsody,” for $1 billion, potentially the largest deal of its kind.

On May 30, it was reported by Bloomberg that Sony is negotiating to acquire the music catalog of Queen, which includes iconic songs like “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

Bohemian Rhapsody

The deal is expected to be worth around $1 billion, making it one of the largest transactions of its kind in history.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” is a song written by Freddie Mercury, first released in 1975 in the album “A Night at the Opera.” It was one of the most expensive singles ever produced at the time and remains one of the most intricately designed pieces in popular music history. Upon release, it achieved immense commercial success, topping the UK singles chart for nine weeks and becoming one of the best-selling singles globally.

The song is known for its unique structure, which includes multiple distinct sections such as a ballad segment, a guitar solo, an operatic passage, and a hard rock part, without a repeating chorus. This eclectic mix has made it a staple in Western popular culture, often referred to as “Bo Rhap” or “Bo Rap.”

In 2018, 20th Century Fox released a biographical film named “Bohemian Rhapsody.” The movie became the highest-grossing music biopic of all time within five weeks of release, grossing over $800 million worldwide and propelling the song and its music video to over 1.6 billion streams, making it the most-streamed song of the 20th century globally.
