SpaceX’s 4th Starship Test Flight Scheduled for June 5

SpaceX announces the fourth Starship test flight could launch on June 5, pending regulatory approval. Key focus: rocket recovery.

On May 24, SpaceX announced via Twitter that the fourth test flight of the Starship is set to begin on June 5, pending regulatory approval.

The live stream of the flight test will start approximately 30 minutes before liftoff, with the launch window opening at 7 AM Central Time. However, this timing is subject to change.

The primary focus of this test flight will be to demonstrate the recovery capabilities of the Starship and the Super Heavy booster.

The main goal is to achieve a landing burn and soft splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico using the Super Heavy booster, along with a controlled entry of the Starship.

This test flight will follow a trajectory similar to previous flights, with a planned landing in the Indian Ocean.

As previously reported, SpaceX has mounted Starship 29 on Super Heavy Booster 11. During the test on May 21, both rockets were fully fueled, and their performance was evaluated.

These tests help certify the rocket systems to ensure they can withstand the high propellant pressure on the day of the flight.

SpaceX has conducted three prior test flights:

  • The first test flight failed as the Starship and booster did not separate, leading SpaceX to destroy the rocket less than four minutes after liftoff.
  • The second test flight saw the Starship successfully separate from the Super Heavy booster after about 2 minutes and 40 seconds, but the booster exploded in mid-air.
  • The third test flight on March 14 launched from the Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas, reaching higher and faster than the previous two flights, achieving orbital speed for the first time.
