DisplayPort standard is the cornerstone of the PC display standard. It has been revised several times since it was first introduced more than a decade ago. This morning, the DisplayPort 2.0 specification was officially released, and the standard has once again achieved a huge leap in terms of improving video quality. The new version of DisplayPort 2 has almost tripled the available bandwidth of DisplayPort 1.4, and many of the previously optional features were moved to the new core standards. In the figure below you can see the evolution of DisplayPort Data Bandwidth! The current version of DisplayPort 1.3 and 1.4 can provide up to 32.4 Gbps of bandwidth, effective 25.9 Gbps. And they can achieve 16.7 million colours (24-bit) 4K@120Hz. But it is still not enough for next-generation displays. This includes Apple's new Apple 6K Pro XDR display. In addition, HDMI Forum has also launched HDMI 2.1. To meet these challenges, VESA has now officially released the DisplayPort 2.0 standard. The fastest mode in DisplayPort 2.0 will reach 80 Gbps of raw bandwidth. To put things into context this is about 2.5 times that of DisplayPort 1.3 / 1.4. In addition, DisplayPort 2.0 introduces a more efficient coding scheme to improve coding efficiency. The effective bandwidth of the new standard will reach a peak of 77.4 Gbps, which is three times that of the previous generation. Source: AnandTech DisplayPort 2.0 is very fast indeed. It supports 8K displays without any compression (including chroma subsampling) and can output 8K video in 30-bit colour format, even at high resolutions. Similarly, it is also possible to output a 10K display in 24-bit colour without compression and a 16K display in compression. The DisplayPort 2 standard would definitely push things forward in terms of what's actually possible through modern displays. And it won't be long before we see such tech being adopted on a large scale on every display. So guys what do you think?
