Today's news on June 18th: Have you ever noticed that when you browse or copy a link on the Internet, there are often unintelligible characters at the end of it that can be difficult to understand? These characters are used by advertisers to track your behavioural parameters, such as where you originated from, where you went, what you selected, and other such details. By doing so, advertisers can push tailored advertisements to you based on your preferences and routines. In an effort to safeguard the privacy of users, Apple has come up with a new feature called Link Tracking Protection in the latest versions of iOS 17 and macOS Sonoma. This feature is designed to automatically remove tracking parameters from URLs in Safari Private Browsing, Messages, and Mail apps, resulting in clean and straightforward links that are free from any tracking data. As a result, when users browse or share links online, they can rest assured that they cannot be identified by advertisers. During the developer conference, Apple demonstrated the effectiveness of this feature, showcasing how a URL that previously had a "click_id" parameter was left with only the basic URL after Link Tracking Protection was enabled. Apple stated that this feature is specifically designed to prevent cross-site tracking and will not affect the regular use of links. The official release of iOS 17 and macOS Sonoma is expected later this year, with beta versions already accessible to developers who can get a first-hand experience of the new feature.
