Toshiba has announced the launch of its new Mx11 series enterprise-class mechanical hard drives designed for hyper-scale enterprises and data centers. The Mx11 series includes two sub-series: the MG11, which utilizes CMR (Conventional Magnetic Recording) with a maximum capacity of 24TB, and the MA11, which employs SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording) with a maximum capacity of 28TB. The Mx11 series enterprise mechanical hard drives come in a standard 3.5-inch form factor, featuring 10 disks, a helium-sealed design, a rotation speed of 7200 RPM, and are equipped with Toshiba's FC-MAMR (Microwave Assisted Magnetic Recording) technology, along with a 1GiB buffer. In terms of reliability, the Mx11 series hard drives support a workload of 550TB per year, with a Mean Time to Failure (MTTF) or Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) of 2.5 million hours and an Annualized Failure Rate (AFR) of 0.35%. The MG11 series, which uses CMR, offers 6Gbps SATA or 12Gbps SAS interface options. The 24TB version has a maximum sustained transfer speed of 295 MiB/s, which is 9% faster than the previous generation MG10F series with a 22TB capacity. Besides the 24TB model, the MG11 series also includes options with capacities of 22TB, 20TB, 18TB, 16TB, and 14TB, with support for Instant Erase SIE and Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) features. The MA11 series with SMR can store up to 2.8TB of data per disk. It is available with 6Gbps SATA interface options and offers capacities of 28TB and 27TB, with optional support for self-encrypting drive (SED) technology. An executive from Toshiba's storage products division stated that the Mx11 series leverages 50 years of continuous innovation in hard disk drives, providing new levels of storage capacity and improving total cost of ownership (TCO) efficiency, helping customers optimize their operational costs while expanding data center infrastructure. Toshiba indicated that samples of the MG11 series mechanical hard drives will start shipping this month, while samples of the MA11 series are expected to begin shipping in the fourth quarter of this year.
