Texas Pioneers AI Grading System, Saving Over $20 Million Annually

Discover how Texas is revolutionizing education by integrating AI for grading STAAR exams, significantly reducing costs and setting a new standard for academic assessment.

Texas has become the first state in the US to publicly adopt an AI grading system, announcing that the written portions of the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) will now be scored using an “automatic grading engine”.

This innovative approach aims to enhance efficiency in grading, focusing on open-ended questions which have increased sevenfold following recent STAAR exam reforms.

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) clarified that while AI significantly reduces the need for human graders, from 6000 temporary graders hired in 2023 to 2000 in the current year, it does not entirely replace them.

This move, as reported by the Texas Tribune, is expected to save the state over $20 million annually, a significant financial benefit previously spent on hiring third-party grading services.
