According to reports on April 13, we know that a research team from the University of Pennsylvania recently surveyed 100 non-federal acute care hospitals (hospitals with emergency rooms) in the United States. And found that 96% of hospital websites share user information with third parties.
In 1996, the United States published the relevant provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA). Which set forth many requirements for hospitals to protect patient privacy. But in actual implementation, the law is “ineffective.”
The research team could only find public privacy policies on 71% of the tracked hospital websites. And among the websites that provided privacy policies, only 56.3% disclosed that user data would be accessed by third parties.
The team also released a similar research report last year. After investigating 3,747 hospital websites in the United States, it was found that 98.6% of the websites tracked user data. And transmitted the data to various third parties including data brokers, advertising companies, and social media companies.
The businesses carried out by the above-mentioned third-party companies all use detailed data to sell targeted advertisements.
