WhatsApp is developing a new feature that aims to suggest contacts for you to message or call. This feature, known as Recently Online, displays a list of contacts who have recently used the app.
The intent behind this feature is to identify contacts who are more likely to reply quickly to messages or calls. However, it does not reveal who is online at the moment but rather provides a rough idea of who has recently been active on the app.
According to WhatsApp update monitoring service WABetaInfo, the messaging service is currently testing this feature, which was observed in the latest WhatsApp beta version for iOS (24.8.10.70) available through the TestFlight program.
The report also notes that a limited number of beta testers might have access to this feature, which has not yet been broadly implemented in the beta version. Similarly, this feature was also detected in the WhatsApp beta for Android in the 2.24.9.14 update, indicating that both platforms may soon include this feature in their apps.
From a screenshot published by the outlet, the Recently Online list is visible on the screens for starting new chats or calls, where a user chooses a contact to message or call. Below the standard menu options, there will be a new section displaying contacts who were recently active.
The specific definition of “recently online” and the duration a contact remains on this list remain undefined.
Moreover, the feature will not display a list of users who are currently online or the exact times they were last active, according to the report. This decision is probably made to safeguard user privacy.
Also, users who have set their Last Seen status to be visible to no one will not be included in this list. It is not specified whether these users will be able to see the Recently Online list themselves.
The feature is still in the beta phase, but reports suggest that it could be released globally to users in the upcoming weeks.
