In my opinion I think that this is not going to happen anywhere in the near future. Consider the example of Facebook, Google+ and Twitter.

All three of them have different utilities and have a specific core niche audience if you ignore for an instant how omnipresent Facebook has become. 😛

Twitter’s hundred and sixty character limit ensures that only the quick witted and brainy junta uses it. Google+ is home to most of the categorization freaks. For those who are hell bent on doing things like this, “This circle for family. This one for close friends. This one for strangers. Blah, blah, blah!” Actually it has its own benefits as you can choose what to share and to whom. But it takes a lot of time trying to sort everyone into such groups, especially if you have a large network like us. And Facebook, well Facebook is for everyone else. The general population who is too tired to think before posting finds Facebook as a relief and an escape route.

Google+ is better in some aspects as we have the ability to post animated gifs on Google plus which makes up almost 80% of my Google Plus stream. Keeping that aside Google plus has a large bunch of users who may not be active. So it’s difficult to ascertain whether it actually is the second largest social network or not. Other issues like slow loading speed and some other aspects are the only things preventing it from being catapulted to the top spot.

Twitter too is omnipresent in many ways. Yet it has not gained full traction globally because it lags behind in US and some other key markets. The only thing that works in favor of twitter is the very thing that works against it i.e. the 160 character limit. Until and unless all the new generation jumps to a less words mode we won’t have a tremendously successful Twitter.

Facebook enjoys the attention of everyone We have kids here , stalkers, the perennially depressed people and the ones whose lives are like rainbows. Everything seems perfect, yet it’s not. We have ample amount of people posting on Facebook just for the sake of it. So, considering the current situation we can infer that all three of them are here to stay.

Niche social networks like Instagram, Tumblr, Pinterest etc. are running because they focus on what they do best and don’t run after the big cake of the user base.

  1. Hi Aditya,
This is an interesting analysis. Social media has taken over the world now. I do see FACEBOOK as the king of all social media but the question here is, will it survive for that long?
