On April 6, 2024, it was reported that users of Windows 10, Windows 11, and macOS have encountered a notable issue with Google’s cloud services, specifically involving Google One.
This subscription service has been altering the system DNS settings to Google’s own DNS server (8.8.8.8), a change that persists even after users attempt to reverse it through standard system controls.
This DNS server, launched by Google on December 5, 2009, offers free domain name resolution services.
Although utilizing Google’s DNS could be seen as beneficial, the lack of user consent and the difficulty in reverting to previous settings have raised concerns.
Notably, Ryan Lothian, a Google engineer, acknowledged these concerns earlier in January, hinting at a potential option for users to maintain their DNS settings.
However, no updates have been made available as of this report.
Amidst these developments, users have found temporary workarounds.
One such method involves using a PowerShell script to bypass the Google-imposed DNS settings, offering a temporary reprieve for affected individuals.
This situation underscores the tension between user control and service provider decisions, highlighting the importance of maintaining transparent and customizable settings for users.
