A lot of people have been waiting for a great budget Android smartphone for a long time. The last time such prayers were answered it was the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 pro. But that device also had a major turn off for many people. It came with Xiaomi’s custom implementation of Android i.e. MIUI. MIUI is great for people who love the features and customization it provides. But a lot of people like me prefer the stock Android approach as it allows us to better customize and change whatever we wish according to our own preferences. Here comes the Xiaomi Mi A2!
When the Xiaomi Mi A1 was launched it was one such phone. It had quality hardware from Xiaomi at an affordable price and the best stock software experience courtesy of Google’s Android One program. Android One smartphones also get updates before other smartphones.
So overall it becomes a win-win situation for everyone. It’s been a long time since Xiaomi Mi A2 rumours have been piling up. Recently Xiaomi confirmed that the MI A2 would be launched on 24th of July in Madrid, Spain.
Its launch date in India is yet to be confirmed as the company hasn’t made any official statement on the same. The China exclusive device Mi 6x would be the model which would come with stock Android experience and would be sold as Mi A2 globally.
Some recent leaks also report that there would be another device i.e. the Mi A2 lite. While the MI A2 might come with an 18:9 display the Mi A2 lite is expected to have a notch style design. The Mi A2 Lite would most probably be an Android One variant of the Redmi 6 pro smartphone. The Mi A2 phone would be launched in Indonesia on July 25 as confirmed by Xiaomi officials.
Both the Mi A2 and Mi A2 lite would come with Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box. They are expected to get Android updates for up to two generations. This means that they will get the Android P update and Q too!
Just like its predecessor the MI A2 would only have two MIUI specific apps i.e. the Camera and Mi Remote app. There would only be necessary GAPPS apart from these apps.
All the leaks point towards the MI A2 coming with a Snapdragon 660 chipset and better cameras when compared to the Mi A1. The Mi A2 lite would come with Xiaomi’s most beloved, almost two-year-old Snapdragon 625 chipset! Honestly, this chipset feels overused in Xiaomi phones by now!
UPDATE: 25th July 2018
The Xiaomi Mi A2 and Mi A2 lite have been globally announced now and the launch date would be 8th August for India.
Manu Kumar Jain, VP for Xiaomi India posted on Facebook regarding the launch date. But the MI A2 Lite won’t be coming to India. The MI A2 with an 18:9 display is the only variant which would be launched in India.
