ASUS ROG gl552jx review complete with tests

ROG: Republic of Gamers. ASUS’ latest launch Asus GL552JX Notebook has a slogan on its back, “Gaming without limits”. But when you actually start using it, you realize that there are limits in this system.

But if price to performance ratio is taken into consideration then this notebook is okay and ASUS may have a chance of attracting a good number of users. Here’s our Asus ROG GL552JX Review for your consideration!

Asus ROG GL552JX Review: Details

Case:

Asus has followed the typical ROG case design, good quality but faulty build quality. You will come across similar black and red colors along with a well-textured lid that will be anthracite based.

The case design is pretty decent and qualifies as nice along with a brushed metallic finish on the edges and an illuminated ROG logo in the center.

Though ASUS hasn’t used any kind of metal, the plastic material has left a good and stylish impression. The only issues we faced were that when we tried to lift the base cover it creaked annoyingly. Also, the hinges suffer from bouncing, but it can be ignored if you keep in mind the size and mobility of the notebook.

Connectivity:

With Asus-GL552JX-Notebook, you only get important ports, the higher price doesn’t really make a difference. Instead of a display port, you get a VGA port for older displays and projections.

The port layout is a bit of an issue as all the ports except the Kensington lock and power adapter are really far behind. On the left side, you find Power, fan exhaust, VGA, HDMI, Ethernet, and 2x USB 3.0, and on the right-hand side, you have the Audio-in, audio-out, USB 2.0, DVD, and Kensington.

Accessories and Maintenance:

Along with standard ROG series accessories, you additionally get a microfiber cloth and zip ties. There is an option to order corresponding ROG accessories in ASUS’s online shop. ASUS offers replacement batteries and maintenance hatch.

The maintenance hatch is pretty easy to open and gives you access to MSSD, hard drives, and memory slots.

There should also be access available for the fan which needs cleaning on a regular basis because it is a gaming device. It was a little disappointing to see no such access to the fan area.

Keyboard:

The keys have an anti-slippery surface with a smooth feel. Though we didn’t like the red-on-black keys concept. It made it a little difficult for us to type, we had to bend a few inches to understand the alphabet. Some of the keys clatter a bit, but overall the keyboard works pretty smoothly.

The strokes are well absorbed and result in a soft typing experience. We wish the numeric keypad would have been a bit bigger, but then we are used to this feature in all ASUS notebooks now. The power switch has been traditionally placed at the top of the numeric keypad only.

Display:

A gamer pines for Full HD panels which ASUS has delivered over time. The display stands at 1920×1080 pixels resulting in pixel density of 141 PPI on a 15.6-inch screen.

The maximum brightness stands at 326 cd/m², but then you will still notice screen bleeding at the top sides when you look at a black picture with the highest brightness level. The viewing angle stability is pretty good. View it from any other, the picture quality almost remains the same. Include more about white and black versions

Performance:

With a powerful quad-core CPU, 8 GB memory, mainstream graphics card Nvidia GeForce GTX 950M with 2 GB dedicated memory as well as the combination of a small SSD and a 1 TB hard drive, the ASUS GL552JX-Notebook is high on credentials.

The SSD has still enough capacity for gamers and ensures a smooth experience and other media files can be stored off the HDD. The gaming performance is limited because of the graphics card, but not because of the processor.

Processor and System Performance:

The 47-watt TDP, along with the CPU Intel Core i7-4720HQ (4 x 2.6 to 3.6 GHz) helps you in handling bigger games easily. The Haswell chip has disappointing power efficiency but keeps up in respect of per Mhz performance.

Besides the processor and graphics card, the system performance scores are around PCMark 7 and PCMark 8. The notebook worked pretty smoothly overall and excessive multitasking was not a problem. Both the operating system and applications launched very quickly.
