On July 19th, Bloomberg reported that Microsoft and Activision Blizzard have signed an agreement to extend the deadline for their acquisition transaction to October 18th.
The deal has already received approval from the governments of 39 countries, except for the United Kingdom’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), who rejected the acquisition in April 2022 due to concerns about potential loss of competition in the cloud gaming market.
Despite “productive” discussions with Microsoft on potential remedies, the CMA has maintained its veto and consultations on the UK side are expected to take several days or even weeks. As a result, the CMA has pushed back the deadline for publishing a final decision to August 29th.
The extended deadline provides more time for Microsoft and Activision Blizzard to address the CMA’s concerns and find a suitable solution.
If the acquisition is successful, it would be a major move for Microsoft in the gaming industry, allowing the tech giant to expand its reach and strengthen its position in the highly competitive gaming market.
In related news, Sony and Microsoft have reached a “binding agreement” to ensure that the popular game “Call of Duty” will continue to be released on PlayStation.
This agreement is a significant development for gamers who play “Call of Duty” on PlayStation, as it guarantees that the game will remain available on the platform.
