Android 15 Beta 1 has introduced a significant improvement in Wi-Fi security. This version has introduced a new setting that by default, disables connections to WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) networks.
WEP is an older security protocol that is easily compromised, making it vulnerable even to non-technical individuals who could intercept and read data transmitted over these networks. This poses a substantial risk to user privacy.
Given the security vulnerabilities associated with WEP, Android 15’s default setting helps protect users by preventing connections to such insecure networks.
However, the system also provides a toggle switch labeled “Allow WEP Network Connections,” which users can activate if they need to connect to older devices that only support WEP.
While this option exists, Google advises users to keep it disabled to maintain optimal security, especially when connecting to public Wi-Fi networks such as those in hotels or cafes, which are more susceptible to security breaches.
We also recommend that users avoid connecting to WEP networks whenever possible and ensure their home routers are updated to more secure protocols like WPA2 or WPA3. Users are also advised to exercise caution when connecting to unknown public Wi-Fi networks.
