Google announced that Google Messages will now use RCS (Rich Communication Services) to send texts to 911.
This feature allows users to contact emergency services via text, which can include high-resolution photos, videos, and precise location data. This is particularly useful in situations where making a phone call is not possible.
Google has partnered with RapidSOS to roll out this feature to emergency call centers across the US starting this winter.
Google highlights several benefits of using RCS for emergency texts:
- Confirming that the emergency request has been delivered and viewing if emergency responders are replying.
- Sending high-resolution images and videos to provide emergency personnel with a clearer understanding of the situation.
- Sharing precise location and other information through Android’s Emergency Location Service to ensure responders can locate the emergency accurately.
