Windows 11’s New Companions Feature for Start Menu: Tests Floating Widget Window

Discover how Windows 11’s latest update adds versatile ‘Companions’ widgets to the Start menu, showcasing real-time information like weather and stocks.

Microsoft’s Windows 11 is currently testing a new feature called “Companions” in its latest preview build 26212.

This feature introduces floating widget-like enhancements near the Start menu, reminiscent of the dynamic tile functionality previously seen in Windows.

Users have the option to position these dynamic tiles either on the left or right of the Start menu, where they can display various real-time information like weather updates, stock prices, and potentially in the future, sports scores, time, and package tracking updates.

This capability is enabled through “Adaptive Cards,” which are programmed using JSON, allowing developers to utilize them across all applications, services, and platforms.

The versatility of JSON ensures that these dynamic tiles can be customized and expanded to include more applications and information types in the future.
