According to recent reports, Audi will persist in utilizing the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform to develop entry-level electric vehicles, including electric variants of the Audi A3 set to debut in 2027.
Observations indicate that the Audi Q4 E-tron crossover is the sole model built on the MEB platform. Conversely, the newly unveiled Audi Q6 E-Tron is founded on the novel PPE architecture, while the Volkswagen Group’s forthcoming SSP platform is anticipated to enter production in 2028.
At the Munich Motor Show, Oliver Hoffman, Audi’s head of technical development, divulged to Autocar that the MEB platform would continue to be leveraged by Audi for the ensuing years, especially for ‘A-Class models’.
Audi’s ‘A-Class’ category encompasses vehicles that are similarly sized to the A3 hatchback and Q2 crossover. The electric A3 is expected to employ a significantly improved iteration of the MEB, referred to as MEB-EVO, acting as a transitional architecture prior to the adoption of the SSP architecture.
Supporting charging velocities ranging between 175 kW and 200 kW, the platform will uphold the extant 400V hardware, mirroring its entry-level placement. Although Audi has yet to disclose additional specifics.
Adhering to Audi’s recently instituted nomenclature policy, electric vehicles are identified by even numbers, whereas internal combustion engines and plug-in hybrids bear odd numbers.
Thus, the electric A3 might be designated as the A2 E-Tron. Audi plans to inaugurate its final internal combustion engine/plug-in hybrid vehicle in 2026, effective immediately.
From 2026 forward, the brand will exclusively introduce purely electric vehicles globally.
