Lessons from Rocky Balboa

Lessons from Rocky Balboa, his name is enough to make most of the people pumped up.

“The Rocky series changed my life” – Rocky Balboa Fan.

Throughout the history of cinema, seldom comes a movie that becomes a cult, inspires people to rise above the ordinary and become something greater.
The Rocky series is one such shining example of movie making.
The core inherent message in the Rocky series is that if you are willing to go the distance, then no one can stop you. Not even age.
Let’s summarize the core lessons from Rocky Balboa.

Lessons from Rocky Balboa
Yes, you there. Get up you son of a bitch. Go after your dreams! Lessons from Rocky Balboa.

Lessons from Rocky Balboa.

1.) Persist in your actions.

Whatever you do, just doing it once isn’t enough. Rocky Balboa won the World championship in the Rocky series two times. But still he had to prove himself again and again. And he did so wonderfully.

Persistence is the key to success.

“You’re gonna have to go through hell, worse than any nightmare you’ve ever dreamed. But when it’s over, I know you’ll be the one standing. You know what you have to do. Do it.” – Duke (Rocky IV)

2.) Resist the things which are of no use.

There are several things which you want to do now. Like you want to chat with people on Facebook, you want to bunk your classes. You want to frolic away all the time. But think deeply will it do you any good. Does it serve you any purpose. Are you in bondage  of your own chains. So just learn that the things which tempt you aren’t the things that are best for you.

3.) Never ever underestimate your opponent.

Whether it’s your session exams. Some deadline you are chasing. Or someone who just wants to outsmart you. Never underestimate the thing you are up against.
As Marty, Mason Dixon‘s guru said in the movie Rocky Balboa,

“There’s always somebody out there.”

4.) Know your strengths and weaknesses.

You must know what you are good at and what are those things that you should never even touch. Rocky Balboa always knew he was good only at one things -Fighting. Though he tried working in ads and stuff. But soon he realized that you gotta do what you gotta do.

“Fighters fight, right!” – Little Marie.

5.) Don’t be afraid of losing.

Rocky Balboa had one thing which he never left. It was that he never felt afraid of losing. No matter what the stakes are you must not be afraid of  losing. After all doing your best is the main thing.

6.) Belief: – If you believe in something, then go the distance. Give it your all. Go all the way to the end.

“If you devote yourself to an ideal. You become something else entirely.”

A quote from Rocky Balboa (2006) sums it up very beautifully.

(You are reading - Lessons from Rocky Balboa.)

I appreciate that, but maybe you’re looking out for your interests just a little bit more. I mean you shouldn’t be asking people to come down here and pay the freight on something they paid, it still ain’t good enough, I mean you think that’s right? I mean maybe you’re doing your job but why you gotta stop me from doing mine? Cause if you’re willing to go through all the battling you got to go through to get where you want to get, who’s got the right to stop you? I mean maybe some of you guys got something you never finished, something you really want to do, something you never said to someone, something… and you’re told no, even after you paid your dues? Who’s got the right to tell you that, who? Nobody! It’s your right to listen to your gut, it ain’t nobody’s right to say no after you earned the right to be where you want to be and do what you want to do!… You know, the older I get the more things I gotta leave behind, that’s life.”

7.) Be good to others. Goodness towards everyone is what you need. Although there will be crazy fellas who would not deserve it. But being good is the key. You would eventually win their hearts. It may take months, maybe years but it would happen. Believe me, I have seen so.

8.) Self Respect matters.
It doesn’t matter if anyone else respects you or not. But being good, being deserving in your own eyes. That’s the only thing that matters at the end of the day.

9.) Winning isn’t everything. Giving your best shot is. That’s one of the core lessons from Rocky Balboa.

If you believe in something, then do not care about just winning. Do your karma.

Karmanye Vadhikaraste, Ma phaleshou kada chana,

Ma Karma Phala Hetur Bhurmatey Sangostva Akarmani

[I can do my duty but I don’t have any control over the results. I’m not the cause of the results and I won’t be attached to inaction.]

10.) Quitting is never an option.

Never can you think of quitting. Life is not a race. But it isn’t a fairy-tale either. This quote related to lessons from Rocky Balboa just hits the nail on the head. Read it.

“Then the time come for you to be your own man and take on the world, and you did. But somewhere along the line, you changed. You stopped being you. You let people stick a finger in your face and tell you you’re no good. And when things got hard, you started looking for something to blame, like a big shadow. Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get it and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done! Now if you know what you’re worth then go out and get what you’re worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain’t you! You’re better than that!”

“Going in one more round when you don’t think you can – that’s what makes all the difference in your life.” -Rocky IV
