On May 5th, 2024, it was reported that former Oculus Chief Technology Officer John Carmack commented on Meta’s Horizon OS, suggesting that Meta could effectively compete with devices like Apple’s Vision Pro.
However, Carmack also noted that Meta does not plan to release a cheaper VR headset in the future.
Meta currently markets its Quest line of headsets at “cost price”, occasionally disregarding development costs in its pricing strategy.
This pricing approach makes it unlikely for Meta to pursue a more budget-friendly product line, despite its dominance in the VR headset market, where it holds a substantial market share.
Even with competitors introducing less expensive options, Meta’s position remains strong.
As of the third quarter of 2022, Meta’s VR headsets commanded an 86% market share.
According to a recent Steam hardware and software survey from April 2024, Meta’s devices represented 61.06% of the hardware used.
Furthermore, there are rumors about Meta introducing a new model, the Quest 3 Lite, as a successor to Quest 2.
This new model is expected to feature the same resolution per eye as the Quest 2 but with updated storage options of 128/256GB and an upgraded Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip, closely matching the specifications of the Quest 2.
