Back in 1997, ID Software released the classic “Quake II”, which was a milestone in both gameplay and quality. Just four years later, ID opened up the engine of the game, allowing players to play freely. Read on for Quake 2 RTX free download details!
In January of this year, Christoph Schied, a doctoral student at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany, created “Q2VKPT”, which means he added Ray Tracing.
This computationally intensive Ray tracing technology unifies all the light effects, such as shadows and reflections, into a single pure Ray tracing algorithm, creating a dreamy real-time RTX version of “Quake 2”, which is a great development!

About Quake II RTX
Quake II RTX builds on the work of Christoph Schied and the team at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, who added ray tracing to Quake II to create Q2VKPT (in turn building upon the Q2PRO code base). NVIDIA has introduced new path-traced visual effects, has improved texturing, and has made dozens of other changes and improvements, resulting in an experience that rivals games created today, and pushes your RTX hardware to the limit.
Buy Quake II
Purchase the game to access all levels as well as multiplayer support. The RTX version for free has only three levels!
Everyone should know about later events. NVIDIA was very interested in this project. After getting the license from Christoph, it developed Quake II RTX.
The Quake II RTX version has been added to the original Q2VKPT. So there’s the real-time controllable amount of light, precise daylight and indirect lighting, water and glass reflections, reflective and translucent surfaces, weapon particles and beam effects. There is Real-time transformation of the mountain sky, cloud environment program map, improved noise reducer, SLI support, high detail weapon models and textures, NVIDIA Flow flame smoke example effects, and much more has been added.
Now, NVIDIA has finally opened up the download of Quake II RTX. You can search for “Quake II RTX” directly on the Steam platform to get the game for free.
In addition to the Windows platform, the Linux users can also play this game, the current content of the game covers the first three single levels of Quake II. Quake II RTX provides real-time lighting, sunlight, and indirect lighting to more accurately reflect light from the water and glass, as well as illuminate objects around the light source.
Quake 2 RTX free download System Requirements
Finally, to play this game, you need a graphics card with RTX, which requires a minimum of NVIDIA RTX 2060. Even on RTX 2060, you would only get 25-45 FPS on max settings. On something like the RTX 2080ti, you can expect to get 70-80 FPS on maxed out settings!
So guys what are you waiting for? If you have an RTX GPU go out there and start playing Quake! The world is waiting for you! And don’t forget to subscribe to Inspire2Rise for more amazing tech and gaming updates like this one!
