On May 21, Sonos unveiled the second generation of its portable smart speaker, the Roam 2, priced at $179 (approximately 1296 RMB).
Unlike the first-generation product, which required complex initial setup via the Sonos App, the Roam 2 is ready to use out of the box.
It can function directly as a Bluetooth speaker without needing a Wi-Fi connection, a crucial feature for portable speakers that Sonos has now recognized.
The Roam 2 introduces a dedicated Bluetooth pairing button, simplifying the previous design where pairing and other functions were integrated into the power button.
Previously, users had to long-press the power button for different durations to access various functions, but now it’s much more straightforward.
Existing users might be concerned about battery life. Unlike the Move series with replaceable batteries, the Roam series has non-replaceable batteries.
Many users have complained that the battery life of the first-generation Roam decreased over time. The new Roam 2 still offers up to 10 hours of continuous playback.
Sonos CEO Patrick Spence stated that the battery has been optimized, promising improved battery life, though he did not provide specific details.
Spence emphasized that they learned from the first-generation Roam that users want more physical buttons and the ability to use the speaker immediately after purchase.
The Roam 2 still supports the “Sound Swap” feature, allowing seamless switching of music between the Roam and other Sonos speakers.
Users can also connect any Bluetooth-enabled device to the speaker and share its audio across the Sonos system. However, the USB-C port remains solely for power, without the line-in functionality found in the Move 2.
Internally, the speaker maintains the same layout as before, with a tweeter and a mid-woofer, and there are no claims of improved sound quality.
The Roam 2 is available in black, green, orange, and white, with the new logo matching the body color, unlike the previous white text logo. The speaker is available at retailers starting today.
