Unreal Engine’s Plugins for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos Released

Today, Dolby Laboratories launched two new Unreal Engine plug-ins, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, which will enable developers to enhance their games with advanced audio and HDR support.

“With the integration of Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos into Unreal Engine, developers can provide gamers with stunning visuals and immersive sound experiences,”

said Mahesh Balakrishnan, the Vice President of Consumer Entertainment at Dolby Laboratories.

“These new plug-ins mark an important milestone in our journey to empower developers with innovative tools that deliver amazing games and immerse players like never before.”

Both plug-ins are free and available for download from the official store, supporting game development for Windows 10/11, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S. Dolby Vision is focused on enhancing the visual effects of games, providing up to 40 times brighter highlights, ten times darker shadow details, and colours never seen on the screen. The Dolby Atmos plug-in, on the other hand, allows for a more immersive audio mix.

Dolby Vision plug-in:

  • Makes it possible to grade all legacy video outputs like HDR10 and SDR in one pass without creating separate assets for each consumer or platform, saving time and resources.
  • Has a GPU frame time cost of under 0.2 milliseconds.
  • Automatically works with Dolby Vision monitors without the need for screen calibration.
  • Allows for the adjustment of SDR’s appearance using clips to ensure consistent picture quality across various display devices, even non-HDR ones.
  • Enables all Dolby Vision features to be updated dynamically via Blueprint or Timeline, giving developers more flexibility.
  • The Dolby Vision plug-in supports the development of games for Windows 10/11 and Xbox Series X|S.

Dolby Atmos plug-in:

  • Offers game developers who rely on native Unreal Engine support the opportunity to develop Dolby Atmos mixes for their games without the need for custom integration, saving time and resources.
  • Provides cross-platform support, with a single Dolby Atmos mix dynamically optimized for all compatible platforms, eliminating the need to create audio projects for all consumers.
  • Adds a new dimension to Dolby Atmos gaming on Xbox and PC with headphones, allowing players to locate opponents by sound for a competitive advantage.
  • The Dolby Atmos plugin supports the development of games for Android, Windows 10/11, and Xbox One or newer.
