As reported by BusinessKorea on July 8th, it has been revealed that Apple is currently in discussions with display panel suppliers regarding the development of a foldable MacBook model. The goal of this project is to revitalize the sluggish display market, which has been struggling to grow in recent years.
Sources within the industry have disclosed that Apple is actively negotiating with suppliers to bring a foldable MacBook model to market. The launch of this new machine is currently slated for the year 2026, with plans to unveil it to the public in 2025.
In order to support the development of this innovative new product, South Korean companies are working closely with Apple to develop and produce OLED panels that are suitable for the IT equipment folding panel market.
Samsung Display has already committed to investing a whopping 4.1 trillion won (which is currently equivalent to approximately 254 billion INR) to produce 8.6-generation OLED panels between 2025 and 2026. Likewise, LG Display is also investing in medium-sized OLED panels, including those panels which will be used for tablets.
It’s worth noting that, while the production of larger displays is generally considered more challenging, the payoff can be much greater. Larger displays tend to yield higher profits in the industry, making orders for laptop screens particularly attractive when compared to those for foldable screens on smartphones.
At present, ASUS is the leader in the foldable laptop market, having launched the world’s first 17-inch foldable OLED laptop, the ZenBook 17 Fold OLED, in September 2022.
However, it’s important to note that the ZenBook 17 Fold OLED uses BOE panels.
