iPhone & Apple Watch May Detect Your Breathing in Future: Apple’s Latest Health Patent Revealed!

Apple’s latest Health Patent outlines how checking for breathing obstructions can become easier in the future.

On August 25, multiple sources and a list published by the United States Trademark and Patent Office (USPTO), reported that Apple had been granted a health-related technology patent, which enables the iPhone and Apple Watch to assess the wearer’s respiratory system.

According to Apple, individuals diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, or other conditions affecting airways may encounter diminished airflow (also referred to as “airway obstruction”) during breathing, leading to difficulties in breathing.

The conventional breath testing method, spirometry, tends to be less reliable and consistent than anticipated and often necessitates the guidance and supervision of a trained clinician.

In their patent documentation, Apple details a mechanism for quantifying the user’s breathing functionality. Utilizing the iPhone’s integrated optical sensing component, the system can identify the user’s thoracic movements associated with breathing, and subsequently gauge breathing patterns through a correlating algorithm.

Alternatively, the Apple Watch can be modified by affixing it to the wearer’s chest using a specially designed adhesive, enabling the monitoring of breathing traits. For reference purposes, we have included the patent illustration below:
