Apple may release a new Dock base/docking accesorry for the iPad!

We learned recently on October 16 that Apple has developed a new dock accessory for the iPad, allowing the device to be turned into a smart home display, similar to what Google’s Pixel tablet does.

At Google’s last event, it announced that it would offer a charging speaker dock that magnetically attaches to the back of its upcoming Pixel tablet, essentially turning it into a smart home display like the Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max. 

Gurman said today that he expects Apple to bring similar functionality to the iPad in 2023 through a separately sold dock accessory, while the company will develop a standalone product for the home that combines a display and a smart speaker.

Gurman wrote in his latest Power On newsletter:

“I’ve been told that Apple is looking into bringing similar functionality to the iPad as soon as 2023. I reported last year that Apple was exploring a standalone device that would combine the iPad with a speaker hub. The idea is to give some users A device that can sit on a kitchen counter, living room, or nightstand. But Apple is also working on an iPad dock accessory that can be sold separately, which will do much of the same thing.”

We have learned that the iPad dock accessory might allow users to use the iPad through the Home app to control different functions in the home, use the iPad’s front-facing camera and centre portrait for FaceTime calls, and more.

Compared to Google and Amazon, Apple has kept a low profile when it comes to smart home products, only releasing the HomePod mini in October 2020 and then discontinuing the original HomePod in March 2021. Apple is also expected to release a new full-size HomePod in 2023. 

According to rumours, the new full-size HomePod will keep the same design as the original smart speaker, but with faster performance and possibly a new display.
