August 6 news: Canon has debuted a security monitoring and application-specific camera, the MS-500, boasting the world’s first single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) sensor.
This marks the debut of one of the most sensitive non-infrared cameras to date. The MS-500 features a cutting-edge 1-inch SPAD sensor with a resolution of 3.2 megapixels, housed within a B4 mount.
The camera works in tandem with a high-quality broadcast lens capable of capturing the night sky at an incredibly low light level of 0.001 lux (comparable to complete darkness) for vibrant color imagery.
Scheduled for release in September, the Canon MS-500 carries a recommended retail price tag of US$25,000 (approximately INR 20,72,218 or 179,000 yuan).
At its core, the MS-500 utilizes a 3.2-megapixel 1-inch SPAD sensor, employing advanced technology to detect and multiply incoming particles at each pixel. Even a solitary photon can be amplified nearly a millionfold, producing a digitized signal with minimal noise.
Merging the exceptional low-light capabilities of the SPAD sensor with a top-notch broadcast lens offering high telephoto functionality, the MS-500 is destined to revolutionize altitude surveillance.
According to Canon, the device targets high-security settings like seaports, public facilities, and national borders.
When paired with Canon’s state-of-the-art ultra-telephoto broadcast lens, the MS-500 can capture clear color footage of distant objects, enabling advanced monitoring such as hull-type inspections.
