Rufus 4.0 Is Released With Improvements and Now Available for Download From GitHub

The Default 64-Bit Executable Program No Longer Supports Microsoft Windows 7

Rufus is a free and open-source utility software that helps create bootable USB flash drives. The latest release Rufus 4.0 official version is now available for download from GitHub.

Rufus 4.0 is the first update to drop the support of Windows 7. An earlier version of Rufus 3.22 dropped the ISO image download function on Windows 7. From now, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10 or Windows 11 will require making a bootable USB flash drive using Rufus.

By default, the Rufus application is now a 64-bit executable. However, you can still download x86 and ARM versions if needed. The developers noted that older versions of Rufus may not update properly, so they decided to skip version 3 and release version 4.

The Rufus 4.0 Changelog:

  • Resolve the issue of persistent partition not working in Ubuntu 23.04
  • Fix the out-of-range pointer error encountered while booting Ubuntu 23.04 in BIOS mode
  • Eliminate boot freezing in Ubuntu Studio when Secure Boot is enabled
  • Rectify incorrect architecture detection while checking for updates
  • Fix Windows Store application crashes caused by processing GRUB bootloaders or enumerating processes that contain a % sign or using German localization
  • Note that Rufus’s major version was updated because of the following reasons:
    • The latest Rufus versions require Windows 8 or a later version
    • The latest Rufus versions come with a 64-bit executable as the default option
    • Older Rufus versions may have difficulty updating properly.

There are other tools available besides Rufus that can create bootable USB drives. Ventoy is another application that provides similar functionality and receives frequent updates with new features and improvements.

Additionally, users can also explore the WinToUSB tool as an alternative option.
