Xiaomi Redmi S2 (Y2) specifications and price, launch date in India


Xiaomi has been on a roll since past few years in a lot of markets. India in particular has been a major market for Xiaomi in the recent years and they have captured a solid share in the budget smartphone market. With their past few launches i.e. the Redmi 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro etc. they have managed to keep the hype engine running for their products. Recently Xiaomi has announced the Xiaomi Redmi S2, it’s going to be a great budget smartphone. Today we are going to talk more about it’s features, specifications, launch, availability and pricing in India!

The Redmi S2 comes with the tried and tested Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 octa core 14 nm chipset, this chipset has already been used in Xiaomi smartphones like the Mi A1 in the past and it’s a very stable chipset with decent price to performance ratio.

It’s a dual sim smartphone with VoLTE support. The body has aluminium at the back and there’s glass at the front. At around 170 grams it’s a light phone.

It has an Adreno 506 GPU, 3/4 GB of RAM, 32/64 GB of storage, all of which are great for an entry level smartphone. It will sport a dedicated microSD card slot with ability to expand storage by upto 256 GB.

The Redmi S2 has a 5.99 inch screen with a 74.5% screen to body ratio and a HD+ display. At 1440*720p it’s not the crispiest display out there but the 18:9 aspect ratio and big size would certainly make things comfortable.

The smartphone would ship with MIUI 9.5 based on Android 8.1 Oreo.

Let’s take a closer look at the camera capabilities: It has a dual 12 MP w/ f/2.2 aperture and 1.25?m pixel size plus 5 MP primary camera sensor. There’s support for gyroscope based EIS, PDAF and LED flash. It can shoot upto 1080p video at 30fps.

The front camera is a 16 MP sensor with 2?m pixel size and a dedicated LED flash. It also supports AI based face unlock.

The device does support FM radio and comes with all required sensors like accelerometer, gyro, compass and proximity. It also has a rear mounted finger print sensor.

It comes with a non removable lithium polymer 3080 mAh battery. It would be available in Champagne gold, rose gold and platinum silver colours.

It’s expected to be launched at 17th of May Globally, but we are still awaiting official launch date in India. It’s been already launched in China and you can easily order the global version of this phone for a price of $181.58 which would be around INR 12,220/-. The Indian final launch price might be slightly cheaper than this.
